What are Gynecological Surgeries& Open Surgeries?
Gynecological surgeries are operations performed on the female reproductive system to correct various abnormalities. Open surgery is a conventional method of surgery that involves making a large incision on the skin to access the internal organs and perform the surgery.
Gynecological Open surgeries
The most commonly performed gynecological open surgeries are:
Myomectomy
Myomectomy involves the surgical removal of uterine fibroids (benign tumors originating in the smooth muscle layer of the uterus). This procedure does not involve the removal of your uterus. It is a widely accepted procedure in women who wish to maintain fertility.
Abdominal myomectomy is an open surgery, where your doctor may make a horizontal or vertical incision in your abdominal wall. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Abdominal myomectomy allows your surgeon to view and access the uterus directly and remove the uterine fibroids. You may have to stay in the hospital for two nights, and it may take 4-6 weeks for your complete recovery.
Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of your uterus. It is indicated for uterine fibroids that cause bleeding and severe pressure symptoms. It is also done to prevent pregnancy from occurring.
Abdominal hysterectomy is performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon makes a horizontal or vertical incision in your abdominal wall. You may have to stay in the hospital for 1-2 nights. It might take 4-6 weeks for you to recover completely. You are advised not to lift heavy weights or drive for at least 1-2 weeks, and have sexual intercourse for 6 weeks until your full recovery.
Oophorectomy
Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of the ovaries by making an incision in your abdomen. It is indicated for ovarian cancer. You may be able to resume your normal activities in 6 weeks after the surgery.
Vulvectomy
Vulvectomy is indicated for vulval cancer. Depending on the extent to which cancer has spread, only the skin, only cancer, a part of the vulva (external genitalia), the whole vulva or the vulva along with the lymph nodes may be removed. The removal may involve a single incision or three incisions as in the case of the removal of the vulva and lymph nodes.
Radical trachelectomy
Radical trachelectomy is an open surgical procedure that is performed to remove the cervix (neck of the womb) and pelvic lymph nodes. The operation is indicated for cervical cancer. A horizontal incision is made across your abdomen, just above the pelvic region, to access the cervix.
You will be discharged from the hospital after about 3-5 days and will be able to resume normal activities at week six.
Risks and Complications of Open Gynecologic Surgeries
Like all surgeries open gynecologic surgeries may be associated with the following complications:
- Hemorrhage (bleeding)
- Infection
- Thromboembolism (blood clot)
